Given the stormy and blustery conditions we’ve experienced over the last few weeks now might be  a good time to familiarise yourself of the effects of wind on the using a Self Erecting Tower Crane in windy conditions.

  1. Before operating the crane familiarise yourself with the crane manual and the section referring to wind conditions.
  2. Always check that the anemometer and warning light are all working properly before operation of the crane.
  3. Maximum wind speed refers to gusting winds and wind gusts will be higher than the mean wind speed.
  4. Care should be exercised when lifting loads of large surface areas and the permissible wind speed to operate will be reduced significantly.
  5. Regardless of wind speed the operator should cease operations of the crane if he believes he is not in control of load being lifted.
  6. Care should be exercised when approaching the crane in windy conditions especially when the slew brake is released.
