All of the Pedestrian Operated Tower Cranes require three phase 380v-400v.
The power supply can be either mains electric or a diesel generator. Mantis have recently upgraded our fleet of generators.
Details on our fleet of generators is available by clicking here.
Yes. On most occasions the Self Erecting Tower Crane can be towed onto site but where access is limited it is possible to lift the crane either into or out of its working position.
The type of Pedestrian Operated Tower Crane base required depends on several factors such as ground conditions and crane model selected.
Mantis Cranes can supply the relevant information to help make sure the correct option is chosen.
Yes. We have had up to five cranes working on the same project, replacing a larger crane with two or more Self Erecting Tower Cranes can result in a major cost saving by increasing productivity and reducing waiting time for cranes.
Yes. When not in use the rotation / slew brake must be released to allow the crane weather vane, this allows the crane to present the smallest surface area to the wind. All the cranes are fitted with wind speed meters which alert the crane operators of the current wind speed on site.
Yes. Mantis Cranes are proud to offer nationwide crane hire services throughout the UK for both Self Erecting Tower Cranes and City Tower Cranes. Mantis have extensive experience in providing crane hire services to the most remote regions throughout the UK.
Self Erecting Tower Cranes provide many benefits.
- They increase on site productivity and shorten project duration
- Materials can be placed exactly where they are needed on site
- Self Erecting Tower Crane hire is typically more cost effective in terms of operating costs in comparison to alternative material handling options

There are two ways Self Erecting Tower Cranes are normally transported:
- If the crane has high speed road axles fitted it can be towed with your standard articulated/rigid truck.
- However, as these high speed axles are expensive most cranes are fitted with site axles which are capable of moving the cranes around site and onto a low loader trailer similar to that used to move excavators etc.
They are fitted with radio remote controls which allow the operator to walk around site as he operates the crane. This eliminates the need for a second person to give signals to the crane operator as he can always be in sight of his load.
No. Self Erecting Tower Cranes erect themselves on site without assistance of any other lifting equipment.
When the Pedestrian Operated Tower Crane is erected on site, the service engineer calibrates the lifting capacities of the equipment. These are not accessible by the crane operator at any stage thereafter. Unlike other lifting equipment, once the equipment reaches its maximum the overload limit switches are activated and the crane hoist and trolley movements are automatically restricted with no override option available to the operator.
Yes all Pedestrian Operated Tower Cranes can be erected / dismantled within a few hours. Times vary from model to model. The Mantis TC-25 is the fastest deploying Self Erecting Tower Crane or City Tower Crane available and is unique to Mantis Cranes Ltd and can be operational on site within roughly one hour.
A Self Erecting Tower Crane (SETC) is a Tower Crane that can be easily inserted on a site with restricted space in a short period of time.
These cranes operate from a fixed position and must be safely placed on site by qualified field engineers familiar with the mechanisms that they are using.
A Self Erecting Tower Cranes is normally operated using a crane remote control, though in some cases an operator cab may be fitted to the tower section.
Self Erecting Towers Cranes are ideally suited to light frame structure, however they can offer many advantages on most projects requiring a fixed position city tower crane. As it operates from a small footprint the safety of the sites that the SETC is placed on is increased due to fewer site movements. For more information on Self Erecting Cranes click here.
Typically, in the United Kingdom, these cranes are place on the following projects:
- Light frame steel or timber
- Multi-storey residential developments/apartment blocks
- Commercial construction projects
- Care home/retirement homes
- Hotels and Leisure projects
- Resto
ration projects with restricted site access
Mantis Cranes provide Self Erecting Towers Cranes ranges in job length from 25m to 45m and lifting capacity from 2000kg to 6000kg nationwide across the United Kingdom. To find out more of arrange a crane hire call us today.

As the hirer/owner of a crane you are responsible for ensuring that the operator has been trained in the safe use of the equipment.
Ideally the operators of remote control self erecting cranes should be trained as Slinger/Banksman and as Self Erecting Crane Operator.
Induction
Like most types of construction plant, each crane has its own unique systems so when we erect a crane on site we take the operator through an induction program to ensure that he/she is familiar with the features of the machine supplied.
This induction is completed and recorded by the engineer erecting the crane on site and usually takes around 90 minutes.
This is considered as model specific familiarisation and not intended as skills training.
Training
Operator training can be arranged either on site or off site. The amount of training required pretty much depends on the competencies and experience of the individual being trained.
The regulations regarding training vary from country to country for example in the UK you have two choices when it comes to operator training, In-House or CPCS Skills registered training.
While In House training is often seen as being the least expensive route, care should be taken when selecting the training provider ensuring that they hold the appropriate accreditation that meets with the employers requirements to avoid a situation arising where the training provided is not be recognised by the construction company concerned so this is something that you should check out before selecting which type of training.
Mantis Cranes Ltd work closely with several accredited training organisations which provide the level of training required and will be very happy to recommend the most suitable of these for your particular needs.
Crane Erection & Dismantle

We at Mantis Cranes have been safely erecting Self Erecting Tower Cranes on site for 15 years. Our team of Crane engineers undergo a factory training programme and have accumulated extensive experience mobilising and servicing cranes on site.
Whether you purchase or hire a crane from Mantis, rest assured that the crane is erected and commissioned in the safest most efficient method, specific to you on site requirements.
Mantis Cranes now offers fully reconditioned ex rental cranes for sale.
The main elements of a self erector refurbishment:
