What is a Site Survey?
A site survey is completed before the crane is installed and it will ensure that the site is suitable for the safe installation and operation of a crane. A Mantis Cranes Representative will evaluate the site to identify potential hazards, logistical issues and safety requirements before the crane arrives on site.
Components of a Site Survey
Site Inspection
Verify that the roads and pathways around the site are suitable for the crane’s weight and size, paying attention to narrow roads, low bridges, and weight restrictions. Roads from the main artery should be included in the site survey, highlighting one-way systems and restricted areas that require a HGV permit.
Determine if a crane lift in/lift out is needed during crane installation or dismantling.
Assess the ground conditions for stability, compaction and underground utilities/voids that would impede the installation and operation of the crane.
Work Area Assessment
Confirm that there is sufficient space for the safe installation and operation of the crane, considering swing radius and load handling.
Identify surrounding obstructions like adjacent buildings, masts, trees, and power lines that could interfere with the operation of the crane.
Load and Lift Path
Understand the type, weight, and dimensions of the loads to be lifted and select a suitable crane.
Determine the best position of the crane to improve lift efficiency and maximise the service area.
Permits and Regulations
Determine if a permit is required for the mobile crane, hoist, and vehicles to be used during the crane installation and dismantling.
Assess if a road closure or HGV permit is needed during installation and dismantling.
Assess Weather Conditions
Evaluate how local weather conditions, wind, rain, and temperature, may affect the operation of the crane.
Coordination & Logistics
Site: Determine the ground reinforcement required. Identify obstacles to be removed.
Coordination: Identify the trades required on site during installation and removal of the crane.
Logistics: Plan the installation, set up and removal of the crane with reference to routes, timings, and transport arrangements.
A comprehensive site survey will identify the most efficient crane for the site and highlight the preparation needed for safe and efficient installation and delivery. When carried out by experienced and professional personnel, a site survey will improve crane efficiency and safety on-site from installation and operation, through to dismantling.
