Historic Buildings
When restoring historic buildings, care must be taken to preserve these buildings for future generations. Cranes play a crucial role in this process and provide the necessary means of material handling, access, precision, and safety required to carry out restorations without causing additional damage.
Over the years, Mantis Cranes have been involved in a number of iconic projects in some recognisable places that involved considerable planning not just to put the crane in place but also for the daily management of materials handling.
But to name a few and you may well recognise some of these projects.
Clare College, Cambridge: A temporary bridge was installed to get the crane into place for the restoration at Clare College.
Lough Derg: Ireland’s most ancient place of pilgrimage. To access the site on Lough Derg, the crane was transported on a boat across the lake to the island.
Maynooth University: A place of historic interest and iconic buildings. On this project, the crane had to be lifted over the 4-storey building from the 1800’s into a location inside the quad. Definitely not an activity for the faint-hearted!
Ross Fountain Edinburgh: In 2018 a two-tonne statute was lifted back into position on top of the Ross Fountain in West Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh. The restoration project took 12 months to complete. The crane operator faced a challenging task manoeuvring to reposition the statue given the small crowd that had gathered to witness the spectacle.

Heathrow Airport: Positioning a crane adjacent to Heathrow Airport involves meticulous planning and adherence to safety and security protocols to ensure safe installation. On this occasion, the tower crane was installed at nighttime when there is reduced flight traffic. Given the restrictions, the Mantis Team were under time pressure to safely complete the installation within the allocated timeframe. Careful planning and excellent teamwork by all involved meant that the crane was erected and ready to work on schedule.
Edernish Island, Co. Donegal: Always willing to take on a challenge, Mantis Cranes could not let the opportunity pass to install a crane on Edernish Island, Donegal. The only house on the island, built in 1904 required renovation and a self-electing tower crane was needed. Access to the island is by ferry only and limited to times when weather conditions and tides coincide.
