Progress on the Grangegorman Campus

Great progress is being made on the Academic Hub and Library for TU Dublin, the landmark building at the centre of the Grangegorman Campus.

Just over 12 months ago Mantis Cranes erected two tower cranes on this site as development began on this section of the extensive TU Dublin development. The Academic Hub will be home to a 12,600 sq. m library along with a selection of student and staff support services, including Career Development Centre, Civic Engagement, Maths Learning Centre, Disability Support Services and People Development. With a total of 19,000 sq. m over 6 floors, The Academic Building and Library will also feature a roof garden with spectacular views over the city.

A Saez TLS65B and a Saez TLS 55 17 Tower Crane are operating on this extensive site. A 6T and a 10T crane, working together, increasing productivity on site. The 2 tower cranes with different capacities, can work simultaneously, improve efficiency, and meet project deadlines. As each tower crane covers different areas on site, materials and equipment can be moved efficiently around the entire site reducing downtime.

Once again, the erection of the tower cranes was carried out efficiently by the Mantis Cranes Team aided by excellent cooperation from the on-site construction team. The Mantis Cranes Engineers adhered to the Lift Plan to ensure the safe and efficient erection of the Tower Cranes on site.

Tower Crane Erection Steps

After the crane arrives on site, the tower sections are built to the required height. A mobile crane is used to build the tower. The mobile crane is also used to lift the jib, counterjib, and counterweights into place. The slewing ring/turntable is positioned on top of the tower and finally, the jib, counter jib and counterweights are then added.

The steps were expertly followed, from unloading the tower and jib sections, connecting the jib sections, erecting the towers, slew ring, ballast and lifting the jib and counter jib into place.

It’s great to see the progress that has been made on this project and on the entire TU Dublin Campus, a sensitively designed development set in a historic area of Dublin City.
